Mane ‘n’ Tail Shampoo and Conditioner: Not just for horses…

Yes – you have read that right!

Mane ‘n’ Tail products are for hair for humans and animals. You might be put off with the idea of this (very much like my boyfriend who won’t touch the stuff!) – but for those like me who have ridiculously crazy, dry and non-predictable hair, it is an absolute god-send!!

Last year, I decided to get my hair cut short after years of having medium to long hair. I have natural thick curls that everyone loves whilst I, on the other hand, have a “love/hate” relationship hair… so when I had it cut short, not only did it feel like a massive relief off my shoulders (no pun intended) – it was a shock to everyone!

But, in order to keep it tamed – I had to keep straightening or if I was going to have a curly day, I would pin it all back and put a hair band in. Why not let it au natural? Unless I was wishing to sport a mini afro that had a mind of it’s own, then no thanks! My hair became greasy if I put hair products in and don’t get me started on that awkward length when I haven’t had time to get to the hairdressers! Even straightening it while it’s short is a pain – I can never do the back properly so it may seem “straight” at the front, but at the back – don’t laugh!!

So the time has come to grow it out – searching everywhere on the internet, there were many different variations to grow it out; massage the scalp, no ‘poo, hair bars with caffine crammed in from Lush (which I tried and failed… plus the other half pinched it for a bit before letting it crumble to pieces in the bathroom!). Then I was pointed towards Mane ‘n’ Tail Shampoo and Conditioner – and wow.

I had to order it online but arrived pretty quickly (thank you Amazon Prime!) and reading the instructions, it seems bizarre seeing the instructions together for human and animal use – at that point, the boyfriend refused to use it and ultimately I was mocked.

Despite being mocked for it, after the first use, I was already impressed! After washing it, I towel dried it and let it dry au natural, and while I did still have my afro – it already felt different compared to any other product. It made it a breeze to straighten my hair the next day and didn’t need to put a lot of products in to keep it tamed. Because my hair gets so dry, I wash it every 2 to 3 days but after the second application a few days later, the change was noticeable.  Just shortly after Christmas, I went to my friend’s house for a typical girly night and had my hair straight (even the back!) and they all asked if I had it chemically straightened 10 minutes of me walking through the door – so they were very surprised when I told them I hadn’t! I think from then, I’ve converted a few more people to the Mane ‘n’ Tail team.

It’s still early days, but so far I generally think out of all the shampoos and conditioners I’ve used all my life (yes, even you Frizz Ease) Mane ‘n’ Tail is the only product that has managed tamed my hair to look healthy (see picture on right) and makes me more inclined to go au natural. But as you can tell from the picture above, it’s made a difference… if this is only from a couple of weeks of using it then I can’t wait to see the long term effect!

In the mean time, I found this blog via Pinterest on someone who’s looked into Mane ‘n’ Tail (Her Campus, Lindsey Sanders 2011) who also looks at other tips. But in the mean time, I’ll keep you posted with the hair growing progress.
